The First Earth Day Symbol or Ecology Sign logo was created by a combination of the letters “E” and “O” taken from the words “Environment” and “Organism”. Future flags used a theta because of its historic use as a warning symbol, or the peace symbol. The Greek Theta Symbol would later become associated with the Earth Day.

What Does the Theta Symbol Mean?

In classical Athens, the theta was used as a warning symbol of danger and/or death. The theta was used as an abbreviation for the Greek word (thanatos, “death”). The theta slightly resembles a human skull, in the same way that skull and crossbones are used today.

The Ecology Flag graphic was created by cartoonist Ron Cobb, and first published in October 25, 1969.

The official Earth Day flag was first founded by a peace activist in 1969. This famous “Ecology Flag” has become a symbol of Green Earth Day, a symbol of environmental awareness, and the celebration of the global community.

The first Earth Day Flag symbol has gone through various changes since 1970. The history of the Ecology Flag, it’s significance and it’s modern day symbolism is essential to understanding modern environmental issues.
