The First Earth Day Symbol or Ecology Sign logo was created by a combination of the letters “E” and “O” taken from the words “Environment” and “Organism”. In classical Athens, the theta was used as a warning symbol of danger and/or death. The theta was used as an abbreviation for the Greek word (thanatos, “death”). The theta slightly resembles a human skull, in the same way that skull and crossbones are used today.
